The Genitive I: Absence

Warm-up

Have you ever been late because you didn't have time? Needed to buy something but didn't have money? Ukrainian has a special case just for talking about things you don't have or that are missing — the Genitive.

Unlike English «I don't have X,» Ukrainian says «By me there-isn't X-genitive» — У мене немає X. This pattern feels strange at first, but it's beautifully logical once you see the system.

💡 Did You Know?

The word немає (there isn't) literally comes from не (not) + має (has). So «немає часу» = «doesn't-have time-genitive». This is why you need genitive here — the noun is the object of «having» that got negated!

What is Genitive Case?

The genitive (родовий відмінок) is Ukraine's «of» case. It shows:

1. Possession — «the book of my friend»
2. Absence — «there is no coffee» (our focus today)
3. Quantities — «a cup of tea» (Module 17)

Today we learn genitive for absence — saying what you don't have or what doesn't exist.

The Magic Formula: Немає + Genitive

Location	Тут немає кави.	There's no coffee here.
Preposition	Без цукру, будь ласка.	Without sugar, please.

Key insight: In English you say «I have no time» (no changes «time»). In Ukrainian you say «У мене немає часу» — the word for «time» changes its ending. This is genitive.

In the Ukrainian dub of «The Lord of the Rings,» when Frodo says «I have no memory of this place,» it becomes «У мене немає спогадів про це місце» — спогади (memory) becomes спогадів in genitive plural. Even hobbits use Ukrainian cases!

Wrong: У мене не час. ❌ Right: У мене немає часу. ✓

You must use немає (not just не) AND change the noun to genitive. Both parts are required!

Without: Без + Genitive

The word без (without) also requires genitive:

• без цукру — without sugar
• без проблеми — without problem
• без причини — without reason
• без терпіння — without patience

When ordering coffee in Lviv's famous cafés (like Lviv Coffee Manufactory), you'll hear:

• «Каву без цукру» — Coffee without sugar
• «Чай без молока» — Tea without milk

Or if you forget your wallet: «Вибачте, у мене немає гро́шей!» (Sorry, I don't have money!)

В українській культурі фраза «немає часу» (no time) дуже поширена. Українці теплі та гостинні. Вони люблять довгі розмови. Але мешканці міст також дуже зайняті.

In Ukrainian culture, the phrase «немає часу» (no time) is very common. Ukrainians are warm and hospitable. They love long conversations. But city dwellers are also very busy.

Ви можете почути: You might hear:

• «Вибачте, немає часу!» — Sorry, no time! (rushing past)
• «У мене зараз немає часу» — I don't have time right now (apologetic)
• «Немає часу!» — No time! (urgent situation)

Але ви також почуєте: «Час завжди є» (There's always time) — especially in villages and with family!

💡 Language Elegance

Notice the beautiful symmetry: немає means both «there isn't» and «don't have» depending on context. This is because Ukrainian thinks about absence as a location issue — «by me there-isn't time» feels more spatial than English «I don't have time.»

This spatial thinking is deeply embedded in Ukrainian grammar. Even abstract concepts like «time» and «opportunity» are treated as things that can be «present» or «absent» in a location.
