💡 Що болить? (What Hurts?)
Oh no! You're feeling a bit under the weather in Kyiv? Don't worry, you've got this! Learning how to say what's wrong is your first step to feeling better. Imagine you are at home and suddenly you feel a bit sick. Maybe your head is heavy, or your throat feels strange. What do you do? Who do you call? Knowing basic health words is essential for safety and comfort in a new country. — У мене болить голова. (My head hurts. — Literally: «At me hurts head.») — Я хворий/хвора. (I'm sick. — m/f) — У мене температура. (I have a fever.)
Aha! Moment: Notice that we use «болить» (3rd person singular) even though YOU are the one hurting! In Ukrainian, the body part is the one doing the hurting to you. This is a very interesting grammatical structure that we will explore today. We will also learn parts of the body and how to talk to a doctor. It's time to take care of your health in Ukrainian!

Pattern: У мене болить + [body part in Nominative] The body part is the SUBJECT (nominative), not the object! It's like saying "To me, the head hurts."

💡 Болить vs Болять (Singular vs Plural)
This is a key secret of Ukrainian!
Use болить (singular) for ONE body part: голова болить, горло болить. Use болять (plural) for MULTIPLE body parts: зуби болять, очі болять.
Remember: the verb agrees with the body part, not with you! You're just the one experiencing it.
