Кольори

You already know how Ukrainian adjectives change with a noun: новий стіл, нова книга, нове фото, нові речі. Colors use the same habit. The noun still chooses the ending.

By the end, you can:

• ask Якого кольору…? as one ready question phrase;
• name core colors such as червоний, жовтий, зелений, синій, білий, and чорний;
• change color endings for masculine, feminine, neuter, and plural nouns;
• recognize why синій is a soft-pattern color: синій / синя / синє;
• keep синій and блакитний apart in useful visual contexts;
• describe a few people safely with phrases such as карі очі, русяве волосся, and сиве волосся.

Keep the goal practical. You are not learning every shade or every case. You are learning to ask about color and attach one color to one familiar noun.

Запитай про колір

Start with the question, not with a color list. Say Якого кольору…? as a single phrase. You do not need to analyze why the form is якого yet.

When you hear the question with a picture or a classroom object, answer first with one color word that matches the noun. In practice, that means:

• Якого кольору олівець? — Червоний.
• Якого кольору светр? — Синій.
• Якого кольору прапор? — Синьо-жовтий.

At a small flower market, Natalka is choosing a bouquet:

Наталка: Які гарні троянди! Якого вони кольору?
Продавець: Червоні.
Наталка: А ці лілії білі?
Продавець: Так, білі лілії.
Наталка: Мені подобаються жовті соняшники.
Продавець: Добре. Загорнути букет?
Наталка: Так, дякую. У синю стрічку.

The phrase Мені подобаються… is a ready phrase here. Store it for recognition. The productive work today is color.

Notice the rhythm of the exchange. The question can point to one thing or many things: Якого кольору ваза?, Якого кольору троянди?. The answer may be one word: синя, червоні, білі. That is enough for A1. If you are not sure about the ending, answer with the full noun phrase: синя ваза, червоні троянди, білі лілії. The noun helps your mouth choose the right color form.

Repeat the question aloud before you choose an answer. The question is stable, and the answer is flexible.

Кольори

Here are the core colors as beginner phrases. Learn the masculine form first, then change the ending only when you attach it to a noun.

Now use узгодження, agreement. A color is an adjective, so it changes to match the noun. You already know the pattern from module 9:

The useful format is noun + color in your head: олівець червоний, ручка червона, яблуко червоне. When the color comes before the noun, the ending is the same: червоний олівець, червона ручка, червоне яблуко.

Only one basic color is a new pattern today: синій. It is soft: синій стіл, синя книга, синє вікно, сині речі. Treat it as a small exception that still obeys the same noun-matching habit.

The other common colors here use the familiar hard pattern: жовтий / жовта / жовте, зелений / зелена / зелене, чорний / чорна / чорне, білий / біла / біле. Say them with objects you already know: жовта стрічка, зелений зошит, чорна сукня, біле вікно. You are not building a color dictionary; you are building usable pairs.

Якого кольору?

After short answers, build small sentences. This is предикативне використання: the color describes the noun after the noun. Ukrainian usually does not need є in this present-tense frame.

The same no-є rhythm works across the course:

• Книга нова.
• Сукня червона.
• Светр синій.
• Пальто сіре.

Liza and Dmytro are planning what to wear:

Ліза: Що мені одягнути на вечірку?
Дмитро: Чорну сукню. І сіре пальто зверху.
Ліза: А черевики?
Дмитро: Коричневі.
Ліза: А як я впізнаю Олю?
Дмитро: У неї карі очі й русяве волосся.
Ліза: А білий светр?
Дмитро: Ні, білий светр сьогодні не треба.

You saw чорну сукню in that dialogue because the dress is an object in the sentence. Do not turn that into a full case lesson today. Your productive A1 phrases are still чорна сукня and Сукня чорна.

Синій чи блакитний

Синій ≠ блакитний

English often says “blue” for everything. Ukrainian gives you two active A1 choices:

You do not need a лекцію про спектр. Use stable pictures. A clear sky is блакитне небо. Deep water or ink can be синє море or синє чорнило. The state flag of Ukraine is синьо-жовтий прапор. Keep that exact phrase.

Two compound color phrases are useful:

• темно-зелений зошит — a dark-green notebook
• світло-синій светр — a light-blue sweater

At A1, just recognize the hyphen in these phrases. You do not need to create a large family of compound color words.

Keep the contrast physical. Imagine a marker filled with deep ink: синій маркер. Imagine a clear spring sky: блакитне небо. Imagine a postcard with the state flag: синьо-жовтий прапор. If another blue word appears in a text, you can recognize it passively, but your active pair is simple: синій for dark or deep blue, блакитний for light or sky blue. This is a Ukrainian color habit, not an English one-word transfer.

Here is the safest memory rule. Синій belongs with strong blue things: синій маркер, синє море, синє чорнило. Блакитний belongs with light-blue things: блакитна листівка, блакитне небо. When you talk about Ukraine’s flag, do not choose between those two ordinary adjective forms. Use the fixed compound adjective синьо-жовтий. The hyphen shows that the two colors work together as one description: синьо-жовтий прапор, синьо-жовта стрічка.

Practice the contrast with one question: Якого кольору небо? If it is a clear, bright sky, answer блакитне. If you point to deep water, answer синє.

Зовнішність

People are not always described by the same simple palette you use for objects. Store these as ready phrases:

The word сивий is especially useful для волосся. If you read a story, you may also recognize голубий as another blue word. Treat it as passive recognition for now. Your active pair is still синій and блакитний.

Say:

• У неї карі очі.
• У нього русяве волосся.
• У бабусі сиве волосся.

Do not copy English color idioms word for word. If you mean “I feel blue,” say Мені сумно or У мене поганий настрій.

Avoid three traps. First, do not insert є into Сукня червона or Якого кольору светр? Second, do not call the Ukrainian flag блакитно-жовтий; the course phrase is синьо-жовтий прапор. Third, do not translate English color idioms literally. Keep Ukrainian phrases Ukrainian.

For your own mini-check, choose three nouns from earlier modules and attach colors to them. Use one masculine noun, one feminine noun, and one neuter noun: светр синій, ручка синя, вікно синє. Then switch to another color: светр білий, ручка біла, вікно біле. Finally, try one plural line: книги зелені or черевики коричневі.

When you speak, keep the sentence short. Якого кольору ручка? Ручка синя. Якого кольору пальто? Пальто сіре. Якого кольору прапор? Прапор синьо-жовтий. This is enough for a useful A1 exchange. The next module will add counting; for now, one noun plus one color is the goal.

End with one small spoken chain: Якого кольору? Білий, біла, біле. Чорний, чорна, чорне. Синій, синя, синє. Then choose one real object and say one sentence about it.
