This lesson gives you the calendar phrases you need for simple plans. Ukrainian calendar words are not just labels. They connect time with routine, weather, nature, and personal dates. Keep the grammar light: learn the useful forms as ready phrases first.

By the end, you can:

• say the seven days of the week and answer Який сьогодні день?;
• plan with у понеділок, у середу, в суботу, в неділю;
• say the twelve months and group them by season;
• use взимку, навесні, влітку, восени;
• give a simple date such as п’ятнадцятого березня without an English preposition;
• plan a simple week with days, months, seasons, times, and events.

The first scene is at a clinic reception desk. It uses days of the week because appointments happen on a specific day.

Пацієнт: Добрий день. Мені потрібен лікар.
Реєстраторка: Добрий день. У понеділок о дев'ятій можна?
Пацієнт: У понеділок я працюю. А у середу?
Реєстраторка: У середу о другій є час.
Пацієнт: Добре, у середу о другій.
Реєстраторка: Записано. До побачення!

Use standard Ukrainian greetings here: Добрий день and До побачення.

Notice the useful shape: у понеділок, у середу, у п’ятницю, в суботу, в неділю. Treat these as whole calendar phrases. Do not use English on. Say У понеділок я працюю when you mean “on Monday I work.”

The second scene connects months, dates, and seasons.

Оля: Коли у тебе день народження?
Марко: У березні.
Оля: Якого числа?
Марко: П'ятнадцятого березня. А у тебе?
Оля: У мене двадцять другого серпня.
Марко: Це влітку!

There are two different jobs here. У березні answers “in which month?” П’ятнадцятого березня answers “on what date?” Ukrainian does not need a preposition before this date. Learn a few dates as whole phrases: першого січня, восьмого березня, п’ятнадцятого березня, двадцять другого серпня, першого вересня.

Дні тижня

The seven days are all written with small letters in Ukrainian: понеділок, вівторок, середа, четвер, п’ятниця, субота, неділя. English writes Monday with a capital letter. Ukrainian does not. The same lowercase habit will apply to months.

Use the base form when you identify the day. Your A1 task is simply to copy the safe line:

In the present tense, do not force є into this sentence. Сьогодні вівторок is the safe A1 line. Сьогодні є вівторок copies English “is” too closely.

You can also make tiny time sentences with сьогодні, завтра, and вчора: Сьогодні вівторок. Завтра середа. Вчора була неділя.

When you say that an action happens on a day, use the planned-day phrase:

For now, do not analyze the case ending. Copy the full phrase. Combine it with time from Module 22: У середу о другій я маю зустріч. У п’ятницю о шостій я вечеряю вдома. В суботу я гуляю. В неділю я відпочиваю. The question is Коли? and the answer uses в/у plus the weekday phrase: У середу я планую урок. The same planning question will later connect to seasons: влітку and взимку are season-time phrases.

The word тиждень means “week” in the standard language. In some speech, неділя can mean a week, but in this course неділя is the day Sunday. Use тиждень for the seven-day period.

The twelve month names are also lowercase:

Many Ukrainian month names are connected with nature. This is a good memory tool. Березень can remind you of береза. Квітень points to flowers. Липень points to the linden tree. Листопад is the falling of leaves.

Місяць і пора року

When you answer “in which month?”, use a month phrase: These month phrases also use у/в:

For seasons, the most useful A1 words are adverbs: взимку, навесні, влітку, восени. They are better calendar phrases than English-style в літо or в зиму. Use them with simple calendar lines: Взимку я вдома. Навесні у мене день народження. Влітку канікули. Восени школа. For a season identity line, say: Це зима. Це весна. Це літо. Це осінь.

У/в для календаря

Dates need one more phrase. Ukrainian asks якого числа? and answers with a date form. First separate скільки? from котрий?: a week has сім days, but Sunday is the сьомий day if you count from Monday. At A1, learn only common examples:

The first word changes, and the month changes too. You do not need the full grammar today; copy the phrases. There is no в before these dates. Say Мій день народження першого січня, not Мій день народження в перше січня. The question is still Коли?
