Милозвучність

This lesson starts A1.5 with a sound habit you will use in every place phrase. Ukrainian often chooses between two tiny words so that the line is easy to say: у/в, і/й, and з, із, зі. Do not treat them as random spelling variants. Read the line aloud, listen to the sounds on both sides, and choose the form that keeps the sentence smooth.

By the end, you can:

• choose у or в in short city and place lines;
• choose і or й when two people, places, or things are connected;
• recognize з, із, and зі in simple phrases;
• repair common learner lines such as Вона у школі and Брат й сестра;
• use euphony while talking about places in Київ, Львів, an офіс, a парк, a театр, or a школа.

Start with your ear. Say each pair aloud once. The smoother line is the one that your mouth can say without a hard stop:

You do not need a long theory before speaking. The first question is simple: which version has fewer heavy sound collisions?

Наталка: Де ти живеш?
Марко: Я живу в Києві. А ти?
Наталка: Я живу у Львові.
Марко: У Львові гарно?
Наталка: Так. А в Києві великий парк.

Notice живу в Києві but живу у Львові. The meaning is the same: in or at a place. The sound neighborhood is different. After живу, the sound ends in a vowel, so в Києві is easy. Before Львові, Ukrainian avoids a hard cluster, so у Львові is smoother.

The second dialogue connects people and a plan.

Олена: Ти й Іван ідете в театр?
Софія: Ні, я і Максим ідемо в парк.
Олена: А Іван і Яна?
Софія: Вони йдуть у театр.

Use й after a vowel when the next word begins cleanly: ти й Іван. Use і between consonants: Максим іде, брат і сестра. Keep і before Яна or letters like є and ї, because they begin with a [й]-sound in speech.

У чи В?

The core pattern is a simple sound check. When a tiny connector stands between sounds, Ukrainian tries to avoid two heavy consonants in a row and two open vowels in a row. You only need two labels here: голосний is a vowel sound, and приголосний is a consonant sound.

Use this as an A1 working rule:

The position at the beginning of a sentence or after a pause is about sentence edges. At the beginning of a sentence, choose the form that gives the first word a clean launch. Before a consonant, use У: У парку тепло. У школі урок. Before a vowel, use В: В офісі тихо. В аптеці черга. The same check works after punctuation pauses: коми and двокрапки often give the next phrase a new sound start.

After a comma, pause, or colon, the same idea returns:

Так, у нас є час.
Сьогодні тепло: у парку багато людей.

Some common phrases keep the line from becoming physically awkward. Before words like Львів, prefer у, even when a simple pattern might suggest в:

The same principle appears in words such as учитель/вчитель and уже/вже. At A1, notice the idea but do not overwork it. Your main job is to read short place lines aloud and choose the smoother form.

For і/й, use the same sound logic.

Say these aloud:

Брат і сестра в школі.
Мама й тато в театрі.
Я і Максим ідемо в парк.
Ти й Олена йдете в театр.

Keep і before Яна or letters like є and ї, because they begin with a [й]-sound in speech. A safe A1 line is Марія і Яна в місті.

І чи й?

Now add the smaller set з, із, зі. The basic meanings can be “from” or “with”; the spelling depends on the next sounds.

At A1, use зі in very common clusters like зі мною, зі святом, and зі школи. The goal is not to memorize a giant table. The goal is to hear that з мною is cramped, while зі мною is easy.

Use the same four-part check with your own lines: Я живу в Києві, сестра у Львові, брат і сестра, мама й тато. Then add a place from A1.5: у місті, в офісі, у парку, в аптеці. If the line feels crowded, try the other tiny word and read it again. This is normal practice, not a mistake.
