You already know simple present-tense verbs. This lesson adds three helper verbs for everyday plans: хотіти “to want,” могти “can / be able,” and мусити “must / have to.” The useful A1 pattern is:
| Person | helper verb | action word |
|---|---|---|
| Я | хочу / можу / мушу | читати / піти / працювати |
After the helper verb, keep the second action in the dictionary -ти form: Я хочу читати, Я можу допомогти, Я мушу працювати.
Діалоги
Olia and Denys are deciding what to do tonight. Read for the job of each helper verb: хочу tells desire, можу tells possibility, and мушу tells an obligation.
Оля: Денисе, ти хочеш піти в кіно?
Денис: Так, я хочу піти в кіно.
Оля: Ти можеш піти сьогодні?
Денис: На жаль, не можу.
Оля: Чому?
Денис: Я мушу працювати.
Оля: Шкода. А завтра?
Денис: Завтра я можу. Хочу гуляти.Support after the Ukrainian lines:

The same tools appear in a café, but service speech needs polite phrases. A direct Я хочу каву is understandable with friends. In a café, make the request softer.
Клієнт: Добрий день!
Офіціантка: Добрий день!
Клієнт: Можна мені, будь ласка, каву?
Офіціантка: Звичайно. Ще щось?
Клієнт: Що можете порадити?
Офіціантка: Борщ дуже смачний.

| agree to the suggestion | Тоді ще борщ, будь ласка. |
Дієслово «хотіти»
Хотіти means “to want.” It is irregular, so learn the present-tense forms as ready phrases. Ukrainian grammar still treats хотіти as І дієвідміна even though the infinitive ends in -іти. For A1, the important thing is practical: do not guess from the ending -іти. Learn the six хоч- forms as one small pattern.
Here are the active forms:
| Person | Form | Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| я | хочу | Я хочу читати. |
| ти | хочеш | Ти хочеш гуляти? |
| він/вона | хоче | Вона хоче каву. |
| ми | хочемо | Ми хочемо піти. |
| ви | хочете | Ви хочете каву? |
| вони | хочуть | Вони хочуть працювати. |
Форми хотіти
Use хотіти + інфінітив when the desired thing is an action:
Я хочу читати.
Ти хочеш гуляти?
Ми хочемо піти в парк.Support after the Ukrainian lines:

| Я хочу читати. | I want to read. |
| Ти хочеш гуляти? | Do you want to walk? |
| Ми хочемо піти в парк. | We want to go to the park. |
You can also want a thing: Я хочу каву, Я хочу воду, Я хочу цю книгу. The menu word is кава; in these request phrases you see каву. For A1, keep the phrases whole. You only need the shape: хочу + action word or хочу + thing.
For a normal negative, put не before the helper verb: Я не хочу їсти, Він не хоче працювати, Ми не хочемо йти. Later you will see different word orders for emphasis, but this is the safe A1 pattern.
Notice the difference between an action and a thing. Я хочу пити means “I want to drink.” Я хочу воду means “I want water.” The first sentence ends with an infinitive, and the second sentence ends with an object. Both are useful, but do not mix the shapes.
Дієслова «могти» та «мусити»
Могти means “can,” “be able,” or sometimes “may.” It can describe real ability, a practical possibility, or polite permission. The base moves from могти to можу / можеш / може, so learn the мож- forms as phrases.
| Person | Form | Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| я | можу | Я можу допомогти. |
| ти | можеш | Ти можеш читати? |
| він/вона | може | Вона може піти. |
| ми | можемо | Ми можемо працювати. |
| ви | можете | Ви можете порадити? |
| вони | можуть | Вони можуть гуляти. |
Use могти + інфінітив:
Я можу читати українською.

| На жаль, не можу. | Unfortunately, I cannot. |
Мусити means “must” or “have to.” It marks obligation or need, but it does not automatically mean an emergency right now. Context tells you how urgent it is.
| Person | Form | Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| я | мушу | Я мушу працювати. |
| ти | мусиш | Ти мусиш читати? |
| він/вона | мусить | Він мусить іти. |
| ми | мусимо | Ми мусимо вчити. |
| ви | мусите | Ви мусите чекати? |
| вони | мусять | Вони мусять працювати. |
You may also hear треба for “need to / should.” Keep треба as a preview today. Your active tool is мусити + інфінітив.
Хочу, можу чи мушу?
Now compare the three helper verbs in the same tiny schedule. Я хочу піти в кіно gives the desire. Сьогодні я не можу піти gives the practical block. Я мушу працювати gives the reason. Завтра я можу гуляти opens a new possibility. This pattern lets you make a real plan with very little grammar.

📋 Підсумок
Choose the helper by the job it does:
| Situation | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| desire | хочу | Я хочу гуляти. |
| ability or possibility | можу | Я можу гуляти завтра. |
| obligation | мушу | Я мушу працювати. |
Then keep the action in the infinitive:
| Frame | Example |
|---|---|
| Я хочу + action | Я хочу читати. |
| Ти можеш + action? | Ти можеш допомогти? |
| Ми мусимо + action | Ми мусимо працювати. |
| Не + helper | Я не можу піти. |
Build a small plan in four lines:
- Я хочу піти в кіно.
- Сьогодні я не можу.
- Я мушу працювати.
- Завтра я можу гуляти.
In a café, use the polite service frame first: Можна мені, будь ласка, каву? If you need advice, ask Що можете порадити? If you accept the suggestion, say Тоді ще борщ, будь ласка.
Правильне чи особливе дієслово?
Use this repair table as a quick writing check. First, find the helper verb. Second, ask whether the next word is an action in -ти. Third, check the person: я хочу / можу / мушу, ти хочеш / можеш / мусиш. Last, for a café line, ask whether the sentence sounds like a request rather than a demand. When unsure, keep the sentence short and choose a complete action word.
| Avoid | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Я хочу читати. | the second action stays in -ти | |
| Ти хочеш гуляти? | ти uses хочеш | |
| Я можу допомогти. | Ukrainian uses можу | |
| Я мушу працювати. | learn я мушу as a ready phrase | |
| Я не можу піти. | finish the sentence with an action | |
| blunt order every time | Можна мені, будь ласка, каву? | service speech needs a polite phrase |
