Questions turn the verbs from the last lessons into real conversation. You can ask who, what, where, where to, when, why, and how without changing the whole sentence shape. The safest A1 pattern is:

For a yes/no question, keep the same words and raise your voice at the end: Ти говориш українською? You may also recognize чи at the start: Чи ти читаєш? For today, intonation is the active tool and чи is a clear written or careful-speech option.

Діалоги

Start with questions that identify a person, a thing, a place, and a time. Read the first dialogue as a small interview. The answers are short on purpose: you are practicing the question word, not long explanations.

Анна: Хто ти?
Том: Я студент.
Анна: Що ти вивчаєш?
Том: Я вивчаю українську.
Анна: Де ти живеш?
Том: Я живу в Києві.
Анна: Коли ти працюєш?
Том: Вранці.

Notice that хто asks about people, and що asks about things, topics, or actions. At A1, keep them in these simple forms: Хто це? and Що це?

Now add the home dialogue from the plan. It shows a question plus a very common negative answer.

Денис: Де моя книга?
Оля: Я не знаю.
Денис: А хто знає?
Оля: Мама знає.
Денис: Чому мама?
Оля: Тому що вона все знає!

Я не знаю is the model negative. Ukrainian writes не as a separate word before the verb: не знаю, не хочу, не можу, не розумію. Do not attach it to the verb.

The same question words work in the city center. In this short navigation exchange, listen for де, куди, як, and коли. The answers stay short because the question word is the focus.

Турист: Де музей?
Перехожий: Музей там, у центрі.
Турист: Куди йти?
Перехожий: До центру.
Турист: Як іти?
Перехожий: Прямо.
Турист: Коли працює музей?
Перехожий: Сьогодні.

Think of each question word as a job. Хто? finds a person: Хто говорить? Що? finds a thing or action: Що ти робиш? Де? finds a location: Де книга? Куди? finds a direction after movement: Куди ти ходиш? Коли? finds time: Коли ти працюєш? Чому? asks for a reason, and the answer often starts with тому що: Чому? Тому що я мушу працювати. Як? asks for manner or a fixed social phrase: Як справи? Як тебе звати?

The clean written order is often:

Ukrainian word order is flexible, so you may hear Ти де живеш? in natural speech. For your own A1 writing, start with the question word: Де ти живеш? It is clear, neutral, and easy to check.

For yes/no questions, use intonation first. Ти читаєш. is a statement. With a rising voice, Ти читаєш? becomes “Are you reading?” If the intonation is hard to hear or you want a clear written marker, put чи first: Чи любиш ти читати? This is useful to recognize, but you do not need to add чи to every spoken question.

Заперечення

The first negative pattern is simple: не + verb. Put не directly before the verb you are making negative.

For spelling, say the two words separately in your head: не знаю, не знаєш, не хочу, не можу. Treat this as a spacing rule and a word order rule: не is separate and it stands directly before the verb.

Утвори заперечення

Use ні as a short “no” answer: Ні, я не знаю. When ні- starts words such as ніхто, нічого, ніколи, and ніде, Ukrainian still keeps не with the verb. Treat the whole sentence as one pattern:

English often uses one negative word. Ukrainian uses the negative word plus не before the verb. This is not extra logic to explain away; it is the standard Ukrainian pattern. For this lesson, produce the ready patterns with ніхто, нічого, ніколи, and ніде.

You may also see ніщо as a subject: Ніщо не допомагає. Keep the same rule: the negative word still travels with не before the verb.

You now have three small tools for everyday questions. First, start with a question word when you need information: Хто? Що? Де? Куди? Коли? Чому? Як? Second, use rising intonation for a yes/no question: Ти говориш українською? Third, make a negative by placing не before the verb: Я не знаю, Я не хочу, Я не можу.

Build a short interview with three questions:

1. Хто ти?
2. Що ти вивчаєш?
3. Де ти живеш?

Then build two safe negatives:

1. Я не знаю.
2. Ніхто не говорить.

When you check your own writing, use this order. Find the question word. Check that хто points to a person and що points to a thing, topic, or action. If the sentence is yes/no, make sure the written question mark is there and say it with rising intonation. If the sentence is negative, find the verb and put не right before it.

Keep the active set small. Produce хто, що, де, куди, коли, чому, як, не + verb, and the ready double-negative phrases. Recognize чи as an optional written or careful-speech question marker.
