Привіт! Pointing is useful before you know many sentences. Ukrainian gives you one easy word first: це. Then it gives you a more precise set: цей / ця / це / ці for things near you, and той / та / те / ті for things farther away or already mentioned.
By the end, you can:
- ask Що це? and answer Це стіл without adding є;
- choose цей / ця / це / ці by the noun’s gender or plural form;
- choose той / та / те / ті for “that / those”;
- combine pointing words with familiar adjectives and colors;
- avoid common traps such as Це є цікава книга, цей сумку, code switching, and ambiguous та in lists.

In an electronics shop, one phone is close to you and another phone is on the far shelf.

The pattern is small:
- цей = this one, masculine: цей телефон, цей стіл
- ця = this one, feminine: ця сумка, ця книга
- це = this one, neuter: це вікно, це радіо
- той / та / те = that one farther away: той стіл, та книга, те вікно
You already know Що це? — Це стіл. Keep that sentence exactly. Ukrainian does not need є in this present-tense sentence. Say Це стіл, not Це є стіл.
Quick win: Ось ця книга тут. Той стіл там. You already understand a small pointing sentence.
Ця чи та?
Цей, ця, це
Use це in two different ways.
First, це can introduce a whole sentence:
- Що це? — Це стіл.
- Хто це? — Це мама.
- Це мій рюкзак.
This це does not change. It is the safe first model.
Second, цей / ця / це / ці can stand before a noun. Then the noun controls the form:

The logic matches earlier patterns:

So цей великий червоний стіл is not a new grammar mountain. It is the same agreement habit: pointing word + adjective + color + noun.
Use ці for plural things near you: ці ручки, ці телефони, ці зелені зошити. It does not matter whether one object would be masculine or feminine. Once the noun is plural, the near pointing word is ці.
Однаковий рід
Той, та, те
Use той / та / те / ті for “that / those” when the thing is farther away or already mentioned.

Ask with який / яка / яке / які:
- Який стіл? — Цей чи той?
- Яка сумка? — Ця червона чи та синя?
- Яке вікно? — Це велике чи те маленьке?
- Які ручки? — Ці сині чи ті зелені?
Чи is the question word for “or” here. It helps you choose between two visible things.
If your brain hesitates, use a two-step loop. First name the thing with це: Це телефон. Це камера. Це радіо. Then point more precisely: цей телефон, ця камера, це радіо. After that, make the distance contrast: цей телефон — той телефон, ця камера — та камера, це радіо — те радіо. You are not learning a new idea each time. You are changing one small choice: near or far, then masculine, feminine, neuter, or plural. That is enough for today. Small correct phrases beat long uncertain sentences for now.
Той, та, те чи ті?
«Та» у двох ролях
The word та can do two jobs:

Both are Ukrainian. The problem is ambiguity when you put them too close together:
- Hard to read: У кімнаті є та книга та ручка.
- Clearer: У кімнаті є та книга і ручка.
At A1, use і for lists when та already means “that” nearby. This is a style safety habit, not a ban on the connector та.

Use ті for plural things farther away: ті ручки, ті телефони, ті чорні рюкзаки. The near/far contrast is now complete: ці means “these,” and ті means “those.” Keep the question small: Які ручки — ці чи ті?

You may also meet two buying phrases:
- Я хочу цю книгу.
- Я хочу цей олівець.
Do not build the full case table today. Just notice the useful feminine shopping phrase цю книгу. If you say цей книгу, the pointing word and the feminine noun do not match. The safe phrase is цю книгу.
You may also see emphatic pointing forms:
- оцей / оця / оце = this exact one, right here
- отой / ота / ото = that exact one over there
Use цей / ця / це / той / та / те actively. Treat the other forms as recognition items for reading or later lessons.

The buying phrase цю сумку / цю книгу is just a useful phrase today. You do not need the full case table yet.

Look around your room and make six tiny sentences:
- Це стіл.
- Цей стіл новий.
- Та книга стара.
- Це вікно велике.
- Ці ручки сині.
- Ті телефони чорні.
Now say three choice questions:
- Який стіл — цей чи той?
- Яка сумка — ця чи та?
- Які ручки — ці чи ті?
Keep Ukrainian self-contained. You do not need another language as a bridge for these forms. The noun gives you the gender, the pointing word matches it, and the distance gives you this or that.
