Котра година?

This lesson gives you a safe A1 way to talk about clock time. Ukrainian uses a different habit from English. For the hour on the clock, Ukrainian asks котра година? and answers with a feminine ordinal word: перша, друга, третя, четверта. Think of it as “which hour is it?” rather than “how many hours are there?” You do not need a full grammar table yet. You need a small, reliable set of time phrases.

By the end, you can:

• ask Котра година? and answer with full hours;
• ask О котрій годині? when you plan an event;
• use о before most hour words and об before одинадцятій;
• recognize пів на for half hours and чверть phrases when you hear them;
• repair two common unsafe time phrases: у вісім годин and пів восьмої.

Read these two short phone scenes aloud. They show the two questions you need: one question asks what time it is now, and the other asks what time an action happens.

Марина: Добрий день, Олексію! Котра година?
Олексій: Десята година.
Марина: О котрій ти працюєш?
Олексій: Я працюю о дев'ятій.
Марина: А обідаєш?
Олексій: Обідаю о першій.
Марина: Тоді зустріч о другій?
Олексій: Так, о другій добре.

Notice the pattern. Котра година? asks for the time on the clock: десята година, перша година, п’ята година. In quick speech, people often drop година and say only десята or п’ята. That is still the same pattern: the hour word behaves like it belongs with година, a feminine word.

О котрій годині? asks for a schedule: о дев’ятій, о першій, о другій. The shape changes because the phrase means “at that hour.” For now, learn the schedule forms as whole phrases. Do not try to build a full case paradigm. Your active job is to pair a daily action with a time: Я прокидаюся о сьомій. Я снідаю о восьмій. Я працюю о дев’ятій.

Here is the same pattern inside a daily routine:

Данило: О восьмій ранку.
Олена: А коли обідаєш?
Данило: О першій дня.
Олена: Вечеряєш удома?
Данило: Так, вечеряю о сьомій вечора.

The time-of-day words help avoid ambiguity: ранку, дня, вечора, ночі. Say о сьомій ранку for 7 AM and о сьомій вечора for 7 PM. For noon and midnight, learn the fixed words опівдні and опівночі.

Котра година?

For full hours, Ukrainian uses ordinal hour words. The basic clock answers are:

This is the first important contrast. П’ять годин is not the same as п’ята година. П’ять годин means a duration of five hours. П’ята година means the point on the clock: five o’clock. So the safe answer to Котра година? is Зараз п’ята, not Зараз є п’ять годин.

Half hours use a second, very common phrase for 30 хвилин: пів на plus the next hour. It means половина до наступної години: the phrase looks forward to the hour that is coming.

At this level, use пів на for recognition and simple production. Say пів на сьому, not пів сьомої. The small word на is part of the phrase. Without на, the phrase is not the safe standard form for this course.

Quarter phrases are useful to recognize, but they are not your main speaking task yet. If you hear чверть на третю, understand it as 2:15. If you hear за чверть третя, understand it as 2:45. For active A1 speech, first be secure with full hours and пів на.

О котрій?

When the question is about a schedule, use О котрій годині? The answer changes from the clock label to the “at” phrase:

Most forms use о: о першій, о другій, о восьмій. Before одинадцятій, the smooth form is об одинадцятій. Learn it as one sound group: об одинадцятій.

Now attach the phrase to verbs you already know:

• Я прокидаюся о сьомій ранку.
• Я снідаю о восьмій.
• Я працюю о дев’ятій.
• Я обідаю о першій дня.
• Я вечеряю о сьомій вечора.
• Фільм починається об одинадцятій.

Do not use у or в for clock time. The sentence Урок починається у вісім годин is not the safe Ukrainian pattern. Say Урок починається о восьмій. The same repair works for everyday plans: Зустріч о другій, кава о третій, урок о четвертій, вечеря о сьомій.
