A1 · Module 45

Коли і де

Що, де, коли — будуємо перші складні речення

Уроки · Lesson 45 of 55Урок 45 з 55

You already know how to link short thoughts with і, а, але, and бо. Now you can add three very useful words for simple complex sentences:

  • що - what / that;
  • де - where;
  • коли - when.

These words can ask a question:

  • Що це? - What is this?
  • Де кафе? - Where is the cafe?
  • Коли урок? - When is the lesson?

They can also connect two parts of one thought:

  • Я знаю, що це кафе. - I know that this is a cafe.
  • Я не знаю, де парк. - I do not know where the park is.
  • Скажи, коли урок. - Tell me when the lesson is.

At A1, keep the second part short. You are not writing long essays yet. You are learning one practical habit: main thought + comma + що / де / коли + short detail.

Діалоги

Choose що, де, or коли

Домовляємося про зустріч

Олена: Ти знаєш, де нове кафе?
Тарас: Так, я знаю, де воно.
Олена: Скажи, коли ти вільний.
Тарас: Я вільний о шостій.
Олена: Я думаю, що о шостій добре.
Тарас: Добре. Тоді о шостій біля кафе.

Олена: Ти знаєш, де нове кафе?Olena: Do you know where the new cafe is?
Тарас: Так, я знаю, де воно.Taras: Yes, I know where it is.
Олена: Скажи, коли ти вільний.Olena: Tell me when you are free.
Тарас: Я вільний о шостій.Taras: I am free at six.
Олена: Я думаю, що о шостій добре.Olena: I think that six is good.
Тарас: Добре. Тоді о шостій біля кафе.Taras: Good. Then at six near the cafe.

The dialogue repeats three useful frames:

  • Ти знаєш, де…?
  • Скажи, коли…
  • Я думаю, що…

Each frame lets you ask for a detail without starting a new separate sentence. The learner task is not to name every grammar term. The learner task is to make one clear A1 sentence.

Гість шукає будинок

Гість: Привіт, Олено! Я біля фонтану.
Олена: Добре. Ти знаєш, де парк?
Гість: Ні, я не знаю, де парк.
Олена: Іди прямо. Де фонтан, там вулиця Садова.
Гість: Я бачу будинок, що стоїть біля дерева.
Олена: Так, це мій будинок. Заходь!

Гість: Ні, я не знаю, де парк.Guest: No, I do not know where the park is.
Олена: Іди прямо. Де фонтан, там вулиця Садова.Olena: Go straight. Where the fountain is, there is Sadova Street.
Гість: Я бачу будинок, що стоїть біля дерева.Guest: I see the building that stands near the tree.
Олена: Так, це мій будинок. Заходь!Olena: Yes, that is my building. Come in!

This scene keeps the place words concrete: фонтан, парк, будинок, дерево, вулиця. Notice that де can point to a place, and що can point to a thing:

  • Я не знаю, де парк.
  • Будинок, що стоїть біля дерева.

The second sentence is a recognition pattern. You do not need to create many sentences like this yet. It helps you read and hear the word що when it connects a description to a noun.

Новина про друга

Марія: Ти знаєш, що Андрій уже в Києві?
Іван: Ні. А де він живе?
Марія: Я не знаю, де саме.
Іван: Скажи йому, коли зустріч у кафе.
Марія: Добре. Я кажу йому, що ти хочеш зустрітися.

Іван: Скажи йому, коли зустріч у кафе.Ivan: Tell him when the meeting at the cafe is.
Марія: Добре. Я кажу йому, що ти хочеш зустрітися.Mariia: Good. I tell him that you want to meet.

This is a real communication pattern: people share a fact, ask for a place, and ask for a time. The whole module is built around those three needs:

  • what is true - що;
  • where it is - де;
  • when it happens - коли.

Question word or connector?

Складне речення

A складне речення is a sentence with more than one part. In the previous module, the parts were equal:

  • Я читаю, а брат пише.
  • Я не йду, бо я хворий.

Now one part depends on the first part:

  • Я знаю, що він тут.
  • Я не знаю, де магазин.
  • Скажи мені, коли урок.

The first part is the main thought:

  • Я знаю…
  • Я не знаю…
  • Скажи мені…
  • Я думаю…
  • Вона каже…

The second part gives the missing detail:

  • що він тут - what is true;
  • де магазин - where something is;
  • коли урок - when something happens.

At A1, use these frames as phrases. You do not need to build a long subordinate clause. You only need one short, useful detail.

FrameUseExample
Я знаю, що…I know a factЯ знаю, що він тут.
Я думаю, що…I think a factЯ думаю, що це добре.
Вона каже, що…someone says a factВона каже, що урок сьогодні.
Я знаю, де…I know a placeЯ знаю, де кафе.
Я не знаю, де…I do not know a placeЯ не знаю, де парк.
Скажи, коли…tell me a timeСкажи, коли зустріч.

The comma is part of the pattern

Write the comma before the connector:

  • Я знаю, що це правильно.
  • Він не знає, де магазин.
  • Скажи, коли урок.

English often skips this comma before “that,” “where,” or “when.” Ukrainian writing does not. The pause is small, but the comma is still there.

Build the frame

Where does the comma go?

Що, де, коли: two roles

The same word can be a question word or a connector.

Question word

Question words usually start a question and end with a question mark:

  • Що це?
  • Де ти?
  • Коли урок?
  • Де парк?
  • Коли зустріч?

The whole sentence asks for information.

Connector

Connectors sit inside a longer sentence and join two parts:

  • Я знаю, що це.
  • Я знаю, де ти.
  • Я знаю, коли урок.
  • Скажи, де парк.
  • Скажи, коли зустріч.

The first part tells us the action: знаю, не знаю, скажи, думаю, каже. The connector then gives the detail.

Later time words: recognition only

You may also see short time markers such as щойно, тільки, and як тільки. They help answer коли? in later sentence work:

  • щойно - just now;
  • тільки - only / just;
  • як тільки - as soon as.

For active A1 production here, keep using коли: Скажи, коли урок. The later words above are useful to recognize, not to build long sentences yet.

A1 repair habit

Many English speakers write the Ukrainian sentence like English:

Learner sentenceBetter Ukrainian
Я знаю де Київ.Я знаю, де Київ.
Скажи коли урок.Скажи, коли урок.
Я думаю що це добре.Я думаю, що це добре.
Куди ти живеш?Де ти живеш?
Я знаю, що кафе?Ти знаєш, де кафе?
Звідки ти чекаєш?Recognize Відколи ти чекаєш? as the time-point repair.
Він спитав коли ми прийдемо.Він спитав, коли ми прийдемо.
Я буду тут до того часу поки ти не прийдеш.Recognize the simpler repair: Я буду тут, поки ти не прийдеш.
Він читає з тих пір.Recognize Він читає відтоді. as the short repair.

The last repair matters because що is not a universal question word. Use де for a place and коли for a time. The rows with відколи, поки, and відтоді are recognition-only; do not make them active A1 production targets.

📋 Підсумок

Use this A1 map:

NeedWordExample
fact / contentщоЯ знаю, що це кафе.
placeдеЯ знаю, де кафе.
timeколиСкажи, коли урок.

Simple frames to practice:

  • Я знаю, що…
  • Я думаю, що…
  • Він каже, що…
  • Я знаю, де…
  • Я не знаю, де…
  • Скажи, коли…

Keep the detail short. A good A1 sentence is:

  • Я думаю, що це добре.
  • Я не знаю, де магазин.
  • Скажи, коли зустріч.

An overloaded A1 sentence is not the goal. Do not add long legal, academic, or later-level explanations. First make the basic connector habit automatic.

Keep the decolonized language habit from earlier modules too. Do not explain Ukrainian place or time words through Russian. Use Ukrainian names and Ukrainian forms: Київ, Харків, синьо-жовтий прапор, Добрий день, До побачення.
