Де це?

This lesson gives you the first place-case pattern in Ukrainian. The question is Де? - where? The answer usually needs a small preposition plus a changed place word: в школі, на роботі, у банку, на пошті.

By the end, you can:

• answer Де? with в/у or на plus a common place form;
• recognize the місцевий відмінок as the place case;
• use the helper questions на/у кому? на/у чому?;
• choose common phrases such as у банку, в магазині, на вулиці;
• keep static location де? separate from direction куди?;
• say в Україні, у Києві, and у Львові with confidence.

Here живу, працюю, and є describe a static place. They answer де?, not куди? You are saying where someone or something is located.

В/у чи на?

Місцевий відмінок

Питання «Де?» та базові прийменники. At A1, make one strong association: Де? needs a place phrase. Most beginner answers use в/у or на plus a changed noun. Say the whole phrase aloud: я вдома, мама на роботі, ми в школі. Do not drop the preposition: Книга на столі, not Книга столі.

Базові закінчення місцевого відмінка для типових груп. Ukrainian changes the noun ending for location. The dictionary form is only the starting form: школа -> в школі, робота -> на роботі, місто -> у місті. Some masculine place words use -у: банк -> у банку, парк -> у парку. Other common masculine places use -і: офіс -> в офісі, урок -> на уроці. For now, learn frequent place phrases rather than a full declension table.

The helper tells you why Я живу в Києві is different from the dictionary word Київ. To describe exact place, the word must fit the place phrase: Столиця України — Київ. Я зараз у Києві.

В чи на?

Семантичний вибір між «в/у» та «на». Use в/у for inside a closed or contained place: в школі, у банку, в магазині, у лікарні, в кафе. Use на for many open spaces, surfaces, events, and traditional institution phrases: на вулиці, на площі, на роботі, на уроці, на пошті, на вокзалі. With countries and cities in static place answers, choose в/у: в Україні, у Києві, у Львові, в Одесі.

There is no disrespectful shortcut for country names. Say в Україні and бути в Україні. Avoid the imperial formula with на for the country. This is grammar, usage, and respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty at the same time. For cities, use в/у: у Києві, у Львові, в Одесі.

Do not explain Ukrainian locative through Russian grammar terms, and do not describe Ukrainian sounds by comparing them to Russian sounds. This lesson uses Ukrainian questions, Ukrainian examples, and Ukrainian place phrases.

Де це?

Keep one warning light: де? and куди? do not always use the same form. Say Він у школі for where he is, but Він іде в школу for where he is going. Direction gets its own practice later; this lesson uses locative forms for static answers.
